6mm GT: The Perfect Balance for Precision Rifle Competition
In the precision rifle world, small advantages lead to big results — and the 6mm GT was built with that in mind. Developed by George Gardner (G.A. Precision) and Tom Jacobs (Vapor Trail Bullets), the GT — short for “George and Tom” — is a purpose-designed cartridge that fills the gap between the high-performance 6mm wildcats and the feeding reliability competitors need in real-world matches.
It’s fast, accurate, magazine-friendly, and designed from the ground up for tactical-style precision rifle competition.
Pros of the 6mm GT
1. Purpose-Built for PRS/NRL
Unlike many other 6mm cartridges adapted from hunting or benchrest backgrounds, the 6mm GT was made specifically for precision rifle matches. That means optimized geometry for mag-fed actions, consistent ignition, and superior brass life.
2. Smooth, Reliable Feeding
One of the biggest issues with short fat cartridges like the 6 BR or BRA is poor feeding in standard magazines. The 6mm GT fixes this. It was designed to feed reliably from AICS and standard short-action mags without the need for spacers or special followers.
3. Impressive Ballistics
With bullet weights in the 105–110 grain range, the 6mm GT delivers muzzle velocities around 2,950–3,050 fps — slightly more than a 6 BR or 6 Dasher. That means better wind performance and less vertical drop at long ranges without punishing barrel life.
4. Excellent Barrel Life and Consistency
The GT balances powder volume and bore size to give shooters longer barrel life than overbore calibers like 6mm Creedmoor, while still delivering match-grade accuracy and tight SD/ES numbers.
5. Growing Support and Component Availability
Thanks to its rising popularity among PRS shooters, 6mm GT brass, dies, and reloading components are more available than many wildcats. Companies like Hornady and Alpha Munitions offer factory brass built to tight specs.
Cons of the 6mm GT
1. Not Available in Factory Ammo (Yet)
The 6mm GT is still a handloader’s cartridge. While the brass is available, factory-loaded ammunition is rare to nonexistent — so reloading is a must for now.
2. Requires Specialized Chambering
You won’t find off-the-shelf rifles in 6mm GT. Most builds require a custom barrel or full custom rifle setup. However, this isn’t a drawback for most serious competitors.
3. Slightly More Recoil Than 6 BR
While recoil is still very light compared to .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor, the GT’s increased powder charge gives it a touch more push than a 6 BR — something to consider if ultra-low recoil is your top priority.
4. Still Gaining Traction Outside Competition Circles
The 6mm GT is rising fast in PRS/NRL, but it’s less known outside the competition space. If you’re after widespread ammo availability or factory hunting rifles, other calibers may be better suited.
Final Thoughts
The GT is the modern competitor’s cartridge — built by shooters, for shooters. It combines the pinpoint accuracy of a BR-style case with the feeding reliability required for real-world match conditions. If you want to shoot fast, flat, and with consistency — without having to babysit your gear — the GT delivers.
For PRS, NRL, or long-range steel matches, it’s quickly becoming the new gold standard.
